Planning to attend a concert or event at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg? Whether you're seeing a major international artist or attending a thrilling sports event, it's important to be well-prepared. How to Get to Volksparkstadion in Hamburg?

The best way to get to Volksparkstadion in Hamburg is by using the S-Bahn. The nearest station is Stellingen, from where it’s about a 15–20 minute walk to the stadium. While shuttle buses are available, they often get stuck in traffic—walking is usually faster and more efficient.

Important tip: After the event, avoid the large crowds at Stellingen station. Instead, head to Eidelstedt station, which is one stop before and generally much less crowded. After the Eras Tour, we made the mistake of following the crowd to Stellingen and got stuck for over an hour. Eidelstedt offers a much smoother exit.

How Do You Pay at Volksparkstadion?

While there are some cashless payment options available at Volksparkstadion, they are not always reliable. Official stadium guidelines recommend bringing cash, as it remains the preferred payment method for food, drinks, and merchandise.

Food and Drinks

German stadiums, including Volksparkstadion, offer a variety of food and drink stands—some even located within the floor section—so you won’t have to leave your spot to grab a drink. Beer vendors also walk through the crowd. However, typical stadium snacks like fries and pretzels might not appeal to everyone.

Volksparkstadion is also close to the lively Altona district, which has plenty of bars and restaurants. It's a great idea to grab a meal or drinks there before the event—you can then easily catch a direct train to the stadium.

Toilets in the Stadium

One of the biggest challenges at Volksparkstadion is the long lines for the bathrooms, especially for women. Depending on where you are seated, waiting times can be up to an hour. To avoid unnecessary stress, try to use the restroom before the event starts and plan small breaks strategically during the concert.

Does Volksparkstadion have a roof?

Yes, the roof at Volksparkstadion covers the entire seating area. However, if you have a general admission (GA) or standing ticket, you’ll be exposed to the elements.

For example, during the Eras Tour in July 2024, it rained at the start of the show and both Taylor Swift and the GA crowd got soaked.

Tip: Check the weather forecast in advance and bring a compact raincoat if rain is expected.
