On the 17th of August, the day after seeing Adele, and with just a bit of rest, we were already on our way to see Coldplay Music of the Spheres Tour at the Munich Olympiastadion. It felt symbolic that exactly two years prior, on the 17th of August 2022, I had seen Coldplay for the first time at Wembley Stadium in London. Back then, we had seated tickets, but this time, I was excited to be in the standing area, hoping to get closer to the band.

Tickets

I got standing tickets quite easily during the presale for 122 EUR each, which I would say was quite a good deal!

Timeline

  • 4:00 PM - Arrival at the stadium

  • 5:00 PM - Doors opened

  • 7:20 PM - Maggie Rogers

  • 9:00 PM - Coldplay

  • 11:00 PM - The End

The Venue

The concert was held at the Munich Olympiastadion, which is easy to reach by public transportation or even on foot from the city center. We stayed near the main train station and took the U-Bahn to the stadium, but after the concert, we decided to avoid the crowded public transport and walked back to our hotel (around 3 km).

The entrance process was well organized. We secured our spots on the floor (keep reading to find out more about that) and started waiting for Coldplay.

There were plenty of drink stands in the floor area, and on a warm summer day, I decided to enjoy a beer—unaware of the downside. At some point, I needed the bathroom and quickly realized they were actually located outside the stadium. I had to walk back through the entire standing area, climb the stairs to exit the stadium, and then wait in a massive queue for around 30 minutes. After that, I had to walk all the way back to my spot. I missed the first opener completely, but in the end, I was just grateful that people were friendly and let me back into my place. Sometimes, if one person leaves, others take the opportunity to push forward. Lesson learned: If you’re in the standing area, be mindful of drinking too much liquid!

Queuing

Our goal was to get as close to the stage as possible, but we were also realistic about our chances. After Adele’s concert, we needed to rest, so we woke up, had a huge brunch, took a short walk around the city, and then went back to our hotel to get ready. We arrived at the entrance an hour before the doors opened. There were already a lot of people, but once inside, we managed to get quite close.

Stage and Our View

Coldplay’s stage setup includes a main stage, a long runway with a circular B-Stage at the end, and a C-Stage further back in the stadium. The general admission area was divided into three zones: the first near the main stage, the second around the B-Stage, and the third covering the remaining space. We chose the third zone because we could stand right at the barricade, which had several advantages:

  • Sitting with our backs against the barricade made the long wait much more comfortable.

  • During the concert, the barricade provided support while jumping or dancing.

  • Even though we were a bit farther away we had a great overview of the entire stage, and when the band performed on the B-Stage, they were actually quite close!"

The C-Stage was used for a few songs in the second half of the concert. So, if you don’t want to spend too much time queuing, you can stay in the back and still get a close-up experience when the band moves there.

The Performance

Do I even need to say anything? Coldplay is amazing! Their concerts truly feel like heaven on earth. Chris Martin is not only an extraordinary frontman, but he also comes across as humble, charming, and funny. The Xylobands (LED wristbands given to the audience) elevate the whole experience. Interestingly, Coldplay first introduced Xylobands on a large scale during their 2012 Mylo Xyloto tour, revolutionizing concert visuals.

Their music ties everything together, from energetic hits to emotional ballads that unite the entire stadium in song. Coldplay also makes a big effort to connect with the audience. At one point in the show, fans held up creative posters and flags, hoping Chris would notice them. If you’re lucky, he might say hi—or even invite you on stage! This time, a couple with an LED-lit poster got invited up. It’s impressive how seriously people prepare for this!

Another special moment occurs when the camera highlights fans in the crowd, and Chris improvises short, funny verses about them—how adorable and personal is that?

A new addition to this tour was Moon Goggles. Everyone received a pair before entering the stadium, and during one song, we were asked to wear them. The result? When you looked at the lights, you saw heart shapes! Such a magical touch.

The Setlist: Coldplay Music of the Spheres Tour 2024 in Munich

The setlist was a perfect mix of classic hits and new songs (though I personally missed Charlie Brown). A special highlight was Green Eyes, played by request for the lucky fans invited on stage. You can check out the full setlist here.

Sustainability

Coldplay is one of the few major bands that actively advocate for sustainability, and I deeply respect them for using their platform to spread this message. Before the concert, they played informative videos on sustainability efforts and encouraged fans to return their LED wristbands for reuse.

They also introduced kinetic dance floors, allowing fans to generate electricity through movement. There were even fun competitions between groups to see who could generate more power. Another cool feature was the power bikes, where fans could pedal to contribute to the show’s energy supply.

For a deeper look into Coldplay’s sustainability efforts, they’ve published a full report that you can read here.

Final Thoughts

If you ever get the chance to see Coldplay live, I highly recommend it—there’s nothing quite like the energy and magic of their concerts. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a longtime fan, the experience is truly unforgettable.
